The importance of the NFL Scouting Combine has not changed since 1982. Every year, the main focus is directed at the medical exams, workouts, interviews and psychological testing. But the NIC (National Invitational Camp), better known as the Scouting Combine, has come full circle since I started in the business back in 1995 with the Carolina Panthers.

Just a few years ago, the Combine was held in the RCA Dome, located in downtown Indianapolis. Just a few years after the Colts won the Super Bowl, plans for a stadium were voted on by the people and was passed. The fans watched the explosion of the RCA Dome and the creation of Lucas Oil Stadium (the home that Peyton Manning built) and one of the best convention centers in the United States.

Friday, February 10th 2012 just felt like the perfect night for a comet to be discovered by an amateur astronomer. I felt really compelled to observe, as the sky conditions were perfect, the cold weather probably scared off other amateurs, and most professional observatories had been shut down by the full moon for several days. That leaves the sky wide open for new discoveries. I was frustrated because the perfect conditions had been squandered away. At this point I really wanted to give up and shut down the observatory as the moon was about to rise. However I reminded myself that you can’t find if you don’t look and so I restarted the system. I let it run for two hours, when it was clear that the Moon was severely impacting sensitivity and it was time to give up.

This image of the Orion Nebula was captured using the Wide Field Imager camera on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at the La Silla Observatory, Chile. This image is a composite of several exposures taken through a total of five different filters.

Light that passed through a red filter, as well as light from a filter that shows the glowing hydrogen gas, is colored red. Light in the yellow-green part of the spectrum is colored green, blue light is colored blue, and light that passed through an ultraviolet filter has been colored purple. The exposure times were about 52 minutes through each filter.

I enjoy creating raw files. (NEF’s in the case of Nikon) However, in the recent past, I really dislike not being able to view them in Windows 7 64 bit, using Windows Explorer.
